The wait is finally over! After 13 years since the revolutionary sci-fi masterpiece Avatar (2009) dominated theaters all around the world, we finally have the first official trailer to the very long-awaited sequel, Avatar 2: The Way of Water (2022). And needless to say, it looks pretty breath-taking. So, let's take a look at the Avatar 2: The Way of Water trailer...
Check out the epic new trailer for Avatar 2: The Way of Water below:
Just like the original 2009 movie, Avatar 2: The Way of Water has been a very long time in the making. And it's really no surprise considering the sheer calibre of movie magic at use.
The first movie pioneered a new age of 3D technology in cinema, while also showcasing the very best of motion-capture technology and computerized special effects.
But the film didn't just break records from a technological standpoint - it went on to become the highest-grossing film worldwide for nearly 10 years until Avengers: Endgame (2019) knocked it off the top spot.
However, a re-release of Avatar in China that same year saw the film reclaim its throne. Now, the long-awaited Avatar 2: The Way of Water might just be set to steal the crown from its own predecessor.
For a long time, the idea of an Avatar sequel was a bit of a running joke - it just never seemed possible. But now, we finally have the first official trailer, which arrives just several months before the film's release in December.
To no surprise whatsoever, Avatar 2: The Way of Water has undergone a number of delays, with the most recent being due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
And we couldn't be more excited about its theatrical release later this year, because the film looks nothing short of utterly spellbinding. Not only are the special effects once again without rival, the film itself looks great.
This time, as we've known for a few years, we will be spending a great deal of time underwater - hence the name of the film. Avatar 2: The Way of Water will pioneer underwater motion capture performances.
James Cameron returns to direct, while returning cast members are Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Giovanni Ribisi, and Joel David Moore will be reprising their roles as Jake Sully, Neytiri, Parker Selfridge, and Norm Spellman.
Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang will also be returning, however this time in undisclosed roles. Kate Winslet and Vin Diesel have also joined the cast, the former as a character named Ronal, and the latter also undisclosed.
Very little is known about the plot, however Wikipedia states the offiical premise as follows:
Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family, the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.
It's clear from the trailer alone that this film will focus heavily on family, as Jake and Neytiri struggle to keep theirs safe from a new human threat. We also see their children in the trailer, as the film takes place a decade after the original.
Avatar 2: The Way of Water is scheduled for release on December 16 this year, while Avatar 3 will release on December 20, 2024. Avatar 4 will follow on December 18, 2026, and Avatar 5 on December 22, 2028.
