How J.J. Abrams Emailed Ewan McGregor 'Literally' Weeks Before Star Wars: The Force Awakens To Include His Voice

Rey's Force Vision in Star Wars: The Force Awakens had been seamlessly put together that one would think all those voices in there had been included in the script from the very beginning.

However, it turns out that Director J.J. Abrams decided to include the voice Ewan McGregor's Obi-Wan Kenobi unbelievably late in production. In fact, the 44-year-old actor shared how it was "literally" weeks before the film's release that Abrams contacted him.

Speaking to Collider for Don Cheadle‘s Miles Davis biopic Miles Ahead, McGregor said:

I was literally emailed by JJ Abrams. I don't know how he got my email, but he emailed me out of the blue weeks before the film came out. Like really, weeks, saying, ‘I really feel like you should be involved somehow.
It feels right that you're a part of it in some way, and there's a scene where Rey is in this sort of dream land and I want to hear Alec Guinness — I want to hear Obi-Wan Kenobi's voice speaking to her.'
So I replied saying ‘I've been waiting for the call.' [Laughs]

McGregor also shared how he used Alec Guinness' iconic performance for inspiration on the voice:

So we pulled up lots of Alec Guinness scenes, watched them, and then we recorded the line. Because that's always what I did. I'd be in my dressing room just watching Alec Guinness and then I'd go on set. I was trying very hard to be Alec Guinness as a young man.

Despite the seemingly spontaneous addition of McGregor's voice in Rey's vision scene, in the end, the scene included both Guinness and Ewan McGregor's voices and has become one of the most talked about sequences. It has also been used in many theories about Rey's parentage.

It's only fitting that even McGregor's voice was included in The Force Awakens, albeit only for a short time. Despite the backlash against the prequel trilogy, McGregor's performance as the young Obi-Wan Kenobi is among the highlights of the series. Right now, there are rumors of at least one film centered on the Jedi are being planned by Lucasfilm. McGregor also expressed his interest for the said films.

Personally, I'd like to see McGregor reprise his role as the young Obi-Wan. It would be pretty cool as well to see him fight Darth Maul again.
