Hell’s Paradise is one of the most interesting shows of the season. And for those who want more insight into the series, Hell’s Paradise manga creator Yuji Kaku was interviewed recently, and he shared the surprising manga and movies that he was inspired by.

The interview was initially published on the anime’s official website and was soon translated by Crunchyroll. There, Kaku explained his relationship with manga growing up.

Kaku also recounted a funny story between him and two other manga creators that he is friends with.

Back when he was a kid, Kaku shared that instead of buying snacks, he would buy manga with the money given to him by a mysterious young man. While his money source was unusual, Kaku said it didn’t feel suspicious.

Specifically, Kaku bought manga that weren’t exactly ideal for kids, as the titles that he bought included Baki the Grappler and Parasyte.

When asked if this bothered him as a kid, Kaku said that it didn’t as he thought scary things were cool.

He also shared his fondness for scary things while drinking with Chainsaw Man creator Tatsuki Fujimoto and Dandadan writer Yukinobu Tatsu. Both Fujimoto and Tatsu told Kaku that he was weird.

Kaku being close with Fujimoto and Tatsu isn’t surprising given that they’ve worked with each other before.

Specifically, Kaku and Tatsu worked as assistants under Fujimoto for Fire Punch.

While they don’t look exactly alike, it’s easy to see how Yuji Kaku’s works were partly inspired, or at least informed by the manga that he read before.

After all, the likes of Parasyte have some frightening or disturbing panels that are not unlike the Hell’s Paradise manga.

Aside from this and Baki, Kaku also mentioned that Junji Ito’s The Long Hair in the Attic was another manga he was fond of, as well as Kentaro Miura’s Berserk.

Manga aside, Kaku also shared that he’s a big horror movie fan. While he didn’t mention specific titles, he said that he tries not to let these movies inspire his work too much lest they become copies.

The Hell’s Paradise manga is complete, though MAPPA’s anime adaptation still has a couple of episodes left. Episode 11 will be released this weekend on Crunchyroll.
