In the middle of Hell's Paradise Season 1, Toma and Chobei encounter two naked androgynous figures; one blonde, and one pink-haired. They're Tao Fa and Ju Fa, two members of the show's antagonist, Lord Tensen.

Tao Fa (the pink-haired, female-presenting character) and Ju Fa (the blonde male-presenting character) are seen engaging in sexual intercourse.

In Taoism, intimacy between two complementary partners is considered to be one of the methods to achieve longevity -- and in this case, immortality.

It seems that, for Hell's Paradise's immortal deities, sexual intimacy is a form of initiation, training, and power exchange.

All aspects of Lord Tensen are genderfluid shapeshifters, but it seems that Tao Fa prefers to show a feminine physique while Ju Fa prefers to look masculine.

Who Is the Villain in Hell's Paradise?

Ju Fa and Tao Fa aren't the series' only villains. They're part of a group of seven, collectively known as Lord Tensen.

Rien is the leader and puppetmaster of the Lord Tensen collective. The group includes:

  • Ju Fa, the gold-haired person the Aza brothers have bumped into
  • Tao Fa, the pink-haired person who was seen in sexual intercourse with Ju Fa
  • Qui Fa, a minor antagonist who meets with the other Tensens to discuss the humans who have invaded the island

  • Mu Dan, a crimson-haired villain whom we've glimpsed for a few seconds in Hell's Paradise's opening
  • Ran, another major antagonist who sports a white flower that grows from his head
  • Zhu Jin, a rather unenthusiastic, but competent and terrifying Tensen.
  • Mei, who takes the appearance of a small girl. She has escaped the Lord Tensen collective as she disagreed with their methods to achieve immortality. She ends up becoming Gabimaru's ally.

Despite being collectively known as "Lord Tensen," Ju Fa, Tao Fa, Qui Fa, Mu Dan, Ran, Zhu Jin, and Mei aren't the same person. They are seven deities who used to act as a collective.

As Mei's defection goes on to show, the members of the collective can still act as individuals.

Rather, Tensen is the higher possible plane of existence for the sages who are natives of Jigokuraku's enigmatic island.

For most of their time together, the seven entities spent their time practicing Tao in an attempt to achieve perfect immortality and make the coveted elixir the protagonists seek.

To that regard, they use arborification -- turning humans into the island's infamous flowers and other plants.

Without spoiling much more, Lord Tensen's goal explains why most humans fail to leave the island intact.
