Febri recently released the second part of its interview series with Hell’s Paradise Sagiri VA Yumiri Hanamori.

In the first interview, Hanamori shared the challenges that she faced in getting Sagiri’s voice just right.

And in this second part, she shared something about Sagiri that’s closer to her heart.

Specifically, Hanamori explained the struggles of Sagiri in her male-dominated field, especially in the Edo Period.

She also explained how this reflects her experiences in the modern world.

When Yumiri Hanamori was asked about what was important when playing Sagiri, she said that conveying her struggle in a male-dominated world was key to her character.

Aside from how the Edo Period wasn’t a great time for women, Sagiri is also doubted by her fellow executioners because she is a woman.

For instance, in the first episode, her resolve is questioned by a fellow member of the Yamada clan.

Her being a woman is seen as a weakness by them.

It also doesn’t help that as a woman, Sagiri is not able to take over the Yamada clan. This is because leading the clan is reserved for male members.

Despite these, Sagiri presses on as she admires her father’s resolve of being able to behead sinners without fear.

Though aside from the challenges of being questioned as a woman, Sagiri also has an internal struggle as she feels the weight of taking the lives of those she executes.

Gender equality in many countries has come a long way from decades ago, but inequality is still very much an issue in most parts of the world.

This sentiment was echoed by Hanamori when asked about how she portrayed Sagiri’s struggles.

She specifically mentioned that she was able to depict this as Sagiri’s struggles in a male-dominated field are something that many women still struggle with.

While Hanamori said that the modern world is not as bad as the time period of Hell’s Paradise, she still feels the fear of being denied as a woman.

One example she mentioned is that as a female voice actress, she isn’t just capable of playing cutesy characters.

You’ll be able to hear more of Hanamori as Sagiri in Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku Episode 3 which releases this weekend.
