HBO Pokes Fun At Amazon Prime’s LOTR: The Rings of Power While Launching Max

As HBO promotes its upcoming rebranded streaming service, Max, the running ad makes a passive remark to Amazon Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

There is no special war going on between the two streaming service, however, Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon and The Rings of Power have been somewhat up to par with one another.

Apart from their thematic similarities, both series ran simultaneously between September 1 and October 14 last year. Despite both being successful in their own right, the overlapped releases sparked competition.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Max streaming service is now running new ads to announce its new brand name, which also includes the features merging content from HBO Max and Discovery+.

The ad featured Daenerys Targaryen sitting on the throne with the caption: “The One To Watch When You Want To Rule Them All.”

This is in reference, of course, to The Rings of Power Season 2, seeing as Max is also in production for House of the Dragon Season 2. With both series not yet confirming their official release dates, it’s possible that they would end up overlapping once again.

Not to mention, the caption is remotely similar to Lord of the Rings’ phrase, “One Ring To Rule Them All.”

A witful fired shot, indeed, since ironically, Daenerys also wanted to “rule all” seven kingdoms of Westeros when Game of Thrones ended.

Needless to say, this little battle between the two series is not likely to end anytime soon, especially with both streaming services looking to resolve their own battles.

Max is currently trying to secure the future of their Harry Potter reboot, with Amazon Prime’s The Rings of Power failing to keep their viewers’ interest throughout the first season.

Although it is worth mentioning that HBO may have the upper hand here, since, in addition to expanding the universes of the Wizarding World and Game of Thrones, Warner Bros., their parent company, intends on adapting new films from the Lord of the Rings novels.
