According to Variety, HBO landed the limited series version of The Birds after being brought to the market by Universal Television last summer.

Succession star Sarah Snook is attached as the lead and will also serve as executive producer on the project. The Leftovers writer Tom Spezialy wrote the pilot and is expected to serve as showrunner.

As the IP title suggests, the modern take will be inspired by the 1963 Hitchcock horror classic and Daphne du Maurier’s novella of the same name. This time around, it will have a murder mystery aspect.

The logline for the series reads: "Escaping a bitter custody battle, Myra Massey (played by Snook) returns home with her young daughter, secretly probing a childhood friend’s suspicious disappearance. With a killer on the loose and personal threats mounting, Myra fights to protect her daughter against a terrifying new menace: vicious, deadly bird attacks inexplicably tied to the crime."

There are no details yet on when the series will begin production or when HBO is planning to release it. If it starts filming next year, a 2028 release is a strong possibility. For now, stay tuned for news and updates regarding the project.

What Is The Birds About?

Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds follows a wealthy San Francisco socialite who pursues a potential boyfriend to a small Northern California town that slowly takes a turn for the bizarre when birds of all kinds suddenly begin to attack people.

The cast includes Tippi Hedren (in her signature role as Melanie Daniels), Rod Taylor, Suzanne Pleshette, Jessica Tandy, and Veronica Cartwright.

While it initially received mixed reviews at the time of its release, it has gained a cult following throughout the years and is now considered to be a horror classic and one of Hitchcock's most iconic films.

A TV movie sequel titled The Birds II: Land's End was released in 1994, with Hedren playing a different supporting character. However, it was panned by critics and audiences.
