LOTR: Rings of Power Season 2 Condemned For Resuming Production Amid Animal Exploitation on Set

A horse has died on set while producing Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power Season 2.

Deadline reports that over 30 horses had been provided for Rings of Power Season 2 as supplied by The Devil's Horsemen, which is quite common when producing popular fantasy shows and films such as Wonder Woman, Justice League, Transformers: The Last Knight, Games of Thrones, and The Crown, according to the company website. However, amid the years of horse supply, this is the first horse within the 50-year running history of the company to have died on set.

The horse reportedly suffered from cardiac arrest while standing by amongst the other 20 horses rehearsing. Apparently, the herd was being prepped for battle at the time. As the horse in question collapsed, the staff and crew were asked to leave for about 30-45 minutes before eventually resuming the filming.

This may not be the first time a horse has died on set. Despite that matter, PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) has issued a statement to condemn Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power for continuing the filming despite suffering an on-site casualty. Long story short, PETA suggests (and urges) for the producers of The Rings of Power to “use CGI, mechanical rigs, and other humane methods that wouldn't run vulnerable horses to death on set.”

The statement from PETA senior VP Lisa Lange continued to point out: “If they can’t avoid exploiting animals for their art, they should find a new medium, because no one wants to see a spinoff for TV with torment as the theme.”

While we have yet to hear what the producers have to say about the option PETA has suggested on CGI, it wouldn't be a first for the franchise to use the common method.

Now, little is known yet on the plot of The Rings of Power Season 2, the least we got came from Amazon Studios' Head of Global TV Vernon Sanders who promised that the second season will definitely be on a "grander scale" and "even bigger battles".

Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power Season 2 is reportedly releasing sometime in 2024.
