  • Quick Answer: HBO is reviving Girls for a five-episode limited series with Lena Dunham and the core cast returning a decade after the original finale.

HBO recently announced that they are reviving its hit series Girls for a limited series, with the original cast returning.

It's been almost 10 years since the Lena Dunham-created dramedy series aired its final episode. Fans have been wondering whether there are plans for a revival and to revisit the characters in the present day. Some cast members have also expressed interest in returning for a potential reboot/revival.

What to Expect in Girls Limited Series Revival

Deadline confirmed that HBO has ordered a limited series revival of Girls, with the original cast and creative team returning. It will consist of five episodes.

Returning cast from the original series will include Lena Dunham as Hannah, Allison Williams as Marnie, Jemima Kirke as Jessa, Zosia Mamet as Shoshanna, and Andrew Rannells as Elijah.

There is no official word yet on whether Adam Driver, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Alex Karpovsky, and Christopher Abbott will also return in the revival for a cameo appearance/guest capacity.

Production will take place next year, 10 years after the original series ended. Dunham and Judd Apatow will return as executive producers, while Williams, Kirke, Mamet, and Rannells will also be credited as co-executive producers.

"We always said we would only return to Girls if there was a specific story we were burning to tell. I've missed these characters, but for a long time I couldn’t quite picture them in the present day. Then, right around my fortieth birthday, they started talking to me in the shower. And, as you may remember, once this fivesome starts talking, it’s pretty hard to get them to stop," Dunham said in the announcement.

"It’s rare that you get the chance to return to something that changed your life with the gift of hindsight and a whole new level of gratitude and understanding. I love these girls (and boy), our friends at HBO, and all the people who have continued to discover the show and remind us afresh why we do this, which is the joy of being together… and the chance to wear yellow mesh…"

The original run of Girls follows an aspiring writer and her three friends in New York as they try to make sense of what life has in store for them after college. They're not sure what they want or whom they want it from, and the picture isn't getting any clearer.

The main cast includes Lena Dunham, Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet, Adam Driver, Andrew Rannells, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Christopher Abbott, Alex Karpovsky, and Jake Lacy.

Over the course of its six seasons, it received 19 Emmy nominations and two wins, including Outstanding Casting for a Comedy Series.
