It may have been a month since the first season ended, but the talk about the Gundam finale continues. Recently, it was reported that Japan’s Broadcasting Ethics & Program Improvement Organization (BPO) received complaints about the Gundam: Witch from Mercury finale.

Specifically, the BPO reported that it has received complaints from viewers about the show’s violent final episode, especially considering how it was inappropriate given the time slot.

The Witch from Mercury is a departure from other Gundam shows as it featured lighter, slice-of-life elements during its first few episodes. Though things took a dark turn in the later episodes, especially in the finale.

Perhaps the most brutal part of the show is the Episode 12 post-credits scene where Suletta Mercury mercilessly crushed someone into a bloody splatter. This moment drew lots of strong reactions from fans.

Given that the show did not start off this dark and brutal, many were shocked by the scene’s violence.

Despite not being as gory as a show like Attack on Titan, Suletta’s nonchalant reaction made it even more disturbing.

Many long-time Gundam fans were pleased with the show’s turn as previous anime in the franchise are similarly dark.

And while most viewers are interested to see what happens next, it seems that not everyone is a fan of the brutality.

According to the BPO’s latest report, the organization has received complaints from Japanese viewers.

One of the complaints is by a parent who was watching the show with their child. The parent thought it was too shocking.

Meanwhile, another viewer complained about the scene, stating that the level of violence shown was not previewed and that it was inappropriate given its Sunday afternoon time slot.

BPO members had mixed reactions to the complaints. Some agreed that the scene was inappropriate for the time slot, while others believed that the darker color of the blood made it less of an issue.

While the complaints have been noted, there’s no indication that these will seriously affect the show. At worse, it might just affect what time the show is aired in Japan.

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury continues in Season 2, which will premiere in April 2023.
