Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury Universe Explained
The Gundam franchise contains multiple universes and timelines as each one is different from the others. However, most of them, including1979 Mobile Suit Gundam, Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, and Mobile Suit Victory Gundam happen in the Universal Century.
On the contrary, it appears that The Witch from Mercury has its own timeline and dimension as it happened in 122 Ad Stella. This makes the series a stand-alone show that takes place outside of Gundam’s main timeline.
The good news about this setup is that The Witch from Mercury does not have to follow any timeline or rules in a certain dimension.
The show's creators have the freedom to do whatever they like with the series to deliver the best storyline as they see fit.
Mobile Suit Gundam Universes and Timelines
As previously mentioned, there are different universes in the Gundam franchise.
To better explain it, we listed each one with a brief summary to differentiate them:
- Universal Century – It is the most popular and dominant timeline that focuses on the rise of the Earth Federation.
- Future Century – The first official alternate timeline which some consider the weirdest too as it is set in a future wherein humanity left Earth.
- After Colony – This timeline gives a western approach to the Gundam franchise. It happens during a time when there is a struggle between United Earth Sphere Alliance and the space colonies.
- After War – This is another alternate timeline that contains parallels to the Universal Century.
- Correct Century – It is considered another alternate timeline that is somehow connected to After Colony and After War.
- Cosmic Era – This timeline features the 21st century.
- Anno Domini – This is the only timeline that uses the Gregorian Calendar.
- Advanced Generation – It is set in the far future after humans migrated to space colonies.
- Regild Century – It is directly tied to the Correct Century and the Universal Century.
- Post Disaster – It is set three centuries after the Calamity War.
- Ad Stella – This timeline takes place in the future when Spacian citizens have adapted to Zero-G existence.
