Fans Aren’t Happy With Lack of Shojo Shows in Crunchyroll’s 2023 Anime Awards

Crunchyroll just announced the nominees of its 2023 Anime Awards, and unsurprisingly, many fans are unhappy with some of the choices. Though some also pointed out that there’s a lack of shojo and female-oriented titles at Crunchyroll’s 2023 Anime Awards.

Given that there were lots of anime in 2022, it’s no surprise that even some fan-favorite shows won’t get nominated.

However, the lack of female-oriented shows may be a more glaring omission, especially as action shows aimed at male viewers are well-represented.

The biggest award of the lineup is no doubt Anime of the Year. There are six nominees for this award, including:

Some of the other big awards include Best Original Anime, Animation, New Series, Performances, Characters, and more. Though what’s interesting to note is that there are no genre-specific awards.

The lack of other categories was a point that fans brought up in the announcement’s comments section.

There, fans expressed their disappointment with the lack of choices in the lineup.

Because of the lack of genres, many believe that the awards are biased toward big shows such as Attack on Titan and Demon Slayer.

Along with these, there are also complaints about the lack of popular shows such as Chainsaw Man and Bocchi the Rock!

Though this can be explained by the fact that Fall 2022 shows are ineligible for this year.

Another result of the way Crunchyroll’s Awards work is that female-oriented shows are not represented. After all, there’s no Best Shojo or Best BL category.

This fact was noticed by fanpage @shoujocrave which mentioned that popular shojo and BL shows were not included in the Awards.

These include titles like I'm the Villainess, So I'm Taming the Final Boss, Sasaki to Miyano, Delicious Party Pretty Cure, and Bibliophile Princess, among others.

Of course, no award series will fully satisfy everyone given that there are only a limited number of nominations open every year.

Though the lack of female-oriented shows is definitely worth considering for future awards so that a wide range of titles and fans get represented.

But at the very least, there are other awards out there that highlight a more specific time or a wider range of titles.
