Next year is going to be a busy one for CloverWorks. Aside from having three upcoming shows, CloverWorks will also release its next anime film titled Trapezium in May 2024.
This new anime movie was announced earlier today with a new teaser trailer and a visual that features the show’s main character.
It may seem like an original film, but Trapezium is based on a Japanese novel that follows a girl who dreams of becoming an idol. What makes it an intriguing novel is the fact that it’s written by a former idol.
CloverWorks’ Next Anime Film Adapts a Novel Written by a Former Idol
CloverWorks is one of today’s most notable anime studios as it has worked on popular titles like Spy x Family (alongside Wit Studio), My Dress-Up Darling, and Bocchi the Rock!, among other hit shows.
For its next work, CloverWorks is producing another adaptation, this time of the Trapezium novel, which was initially released in a serialized format from April 2016 to August 2018.
This novel is written by Kazumi Takayama, a first-generation member of Nogizaka46, one of Japan’s most popular idol groups. It is even billed as the official rival group of the ever-popular AKB48.
It’s not billed as a semi-autobiographical story, but Takayama’s experience as an idol was likely a major influence on the novel’s story.
This novel follows Yu Higashi, a ten-year-old girl who dreams of becoming an idol. She is serious about this goal, enough that she resolves to set rules such as not going on social media and not dating guys.

Trapezium Anime Film Gets Teaser Trailer and Visual
Alongside the film’s announcement, a teaser trailer was shown that gives anime fans their first look at Yu Higashi. This short teaser doesn’t reveal much, though it hints that the film won’t just be a lighthearted idol anime.
The trailer also previews the anime’s theme song by MAISONdes, the Japanese music unit behind the songs for the Urusei Yatsura reboot.
Also revealed is the film’s main star. Voicing Yu Higashi is Asaki Yuikawa, the VA of Mu-chan in Tonari no Youkai-san and Hojo Tokiyuki in the upcoming Elusive Samurai anime.
The Trapezium anime film is set to be released in Japanese cinemas on May 10, 2024. For now, there are no release plans for this film outside of Japan.
If it does get released in US cinemas, chances are that it will get a more limited release, as most anime films that get wide releases are mostly part of shonen franchises.
