The recent events of Chainsaw Man were already violent, but did you know that it was supposed to be even worse? Well, that’s exactly what Chainsaw Man creator Tatsuki Fujimoto revealed when he mentioned the much darker original idea for Kobeni’s scene in Episode 9.
After the episode aired, Fujimoto revealed via his personal Twitter account (which is in the guise of his fictional little sister) that Kobeni and Arai’s scene in the episode was originally much more violent.
Kobeni Survives, Fights Katana Man and Akane Sawatari
The anime’s depiction of the scene is already dark enough. After all, seeing Arai get shot wasn’t a pretty sight, especially for squeamish viewers given the violent on-screen depiction.
What followed was Kobeni reacting fast and shooting the assailant.
Kobeni’s moves ended with a gruesome shot to the head of the gunner which many anime-only fans found to be unexpected given Kobeni’s fearfulness in the Eternity Devil fight.
Undeterred, Kobeni went on the move and came face-to-face with Katana Man and Akane Sawatari.
She correctly deduced that these two were behind the attack.
It was good news for Kobeni that Katana Man was too wounded to transform. Though Akane and her Snake Devil are still a force to be reckoned with.
Despite this, Kobeni went on the attack, managing to expertly dodge the Snake Devil’s moves and getting some solid shots in on Katana Man.
The two manage to get away in their van, but Kobeni was still able to save Denji from getting captured.
Right after, Kobeni breaks down and exclaims that she wants to quit.

Kobeni and Arai's Scene Was Originally Darker
The anime’s events followed the manga source material closely, though it did flesh out some scenes.
Specifically, Kobeni killing the assailant was shown in the anime while her Snake Devil dodges were more detailed.
In the fight, Kobeni is shown using Denji as a human shield, though Fujimoto revealed that Kobeni was also originally going to use Arai as a human shield.
Arai’s final moment in the anime was of him taking a bullet for Kobeni, so the original idea of Kobeni using him as a shield is definitely much darker—which is pretty fitting for Chainsaw Man.
While this darker original idea wasn’t used given that it didn’t work in terms of consistency, the series isn’t lacking when it comes to dark and violent moments.
After all, Makima killing off the gun-wielding goons is already incredibly graphic.
The Chainsaw Man anime continues next Tuesday with Episode 10.
