Blue Period Episode 10 Recap
Yaguchi accompanies Yuka to a seaside town, only to find out they have no accommodation planned. The two check-in at a cheap hotel and spend some time together. Yuka explains their family situation and how they only got into Japanese art due to their grandmother's love for it. Yuka's position as an lgbtq+ teenager is very vulnerable, and, while their grandmother owns the family house, her power to help is limited.
Before checking out, Yaguchi expresses his wish to draw the sea. Instead, Yuka proposes that Yaguchi does a naked self-portrait as this will help him learn more about himself. Yaguchi does so when Yuka agrees to do the same. Yuka's gender identity comes up. I'll be honest, the words used seem a little vague and Yuka's pronouns are again not clear. I don't know if it's the subtitles, but Yaguchi's words about "labeling" did make me a bit uncomfortable. Yuka is such a great character though, and I hope that it all boils down to Yaguchi understanding he was ignorant about his friend's identity and doing better.
Oba is impressed by Yaguchi's self-portrait and encourages him before the exam. Will he manage to take it, though? When a broken elevator forces him to go up ten stories with his art supplies, Yaguchi all but gives up. His hives have gotten worse and his vision problems are out of control. But this can't be the end for him; can it? Getting sick just before an important exam is an exam taker's worst nightmare, and Episode 11 can't come soon enough!
