Blue Period Episode 10 is coming soon, with Yaguchi's second exam. Episode 9 was a break from the antagonistic environment of the prep school. Instead, the focus was on Yuka, who has been silently struggling for quite some time. The circumstances around Yuka's withdrawal from the exam are explained, ending with an important message: it's okay to give up on a dream that no longer serves us.
The 12-episode slice of life anime is clearly all about fighting for one's dream, but it's also been honest about the often unhealthy, antagonistic art industry. Yaguchi might be ready to fight for the career of his dreams, but, as time goes by, Yuka realizes they want something different.
Looking forward to catching up with the next episode, and, hopefully, learning more about Yuka? Keep reading! Below, you'll find all you need to know about Blue Period Episode 9, including its release date, airing time, and more!
Blue Period Episode 9 Recap
Yaguchi continues his preparation for the second exam. He takes his concerns about color to Oba, who advises him to be more perceptive.
In fact, perception seems like a major issue for Yaguchi in other areas too. For one, he's oblivious to Yuka's struggle, consistently deadnaming them and misunderstanding the kind of support his friend needs. As Yuka puts it, Yaguchi will throw someone a life jacket if they are drowning but will not fall in the water.
After having given up on art school, Yuka gets a part-time job at a bar. Their parents don't even try to hide their disappointment, as they'd only supported Yuka's art because they thought Yuka would make traditional Japanese artworks. Yuka's grandmother is the only one who supports their gender expression, but she stills views Yuka as a young child who wants to be a painter.
Kuwana and a friend of hers alert Yaguchi to Yuka's struggle, as they are now trying to pursue fashion design without support from their parents. In a last cruel act, Yuka's parents completely empty their room, and name that the last chance for Yuka to become what they perceive as normal. Yuka's grandmother only manages to save her art supplies.
Yaguchi agrees to meet Yuka and try "downing" with them, even though his exam is tomorrow and the two set out for the sea.
Now that Yuka is the focus, some of the show's most problematic aspects become apparent. The Netflix dub is undecided between she/ her and they/them pronouns, so the latter are used in this review as a gender-neutral option since the character's pronouns aren't clear. It's clear that Yaguchi needs to be a better ally, and I hope that this will be addressed.
On another note, the episode is important in its treatment of changed career plans. Sure, choosing a controversial artistic career is tough and important. At the same time, choosing not to pursue a specific career, even after having tried for years, is an equally valid option. The show reminds us that no matter how far we've come, it's never too late to try a different route if the old one no longer works.
