Black Panther Actor Opens Up About His Spider-Verse Casting

A while ago, we learned that Black Panther star Daniel Kaluuya is jumping ship to another Marvel project as he was cast to voice Spider-Punk in the upcoming animated film Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. The Oscar nominee's casting was celebrated by fans as a lot of them see him as a good fit to do the role.

Speaking with Empire Magazine, Kaluuya discussed publicly for the first time his Spider-Verse casting where he shared his experience of voicing his character and how delighted he is that he was able to channel his Camden roots on performing the role.

"I was gassed," he said. "I turned to Lord, Miller and Kemp and said, ‘Thank you for letting me be a part of it, because this is cool as fuck.’ I’m a voice in Spider-Verse with a wicked character that sounds exactly like me, from where I’m from. Come on! You go to the younger people in your family and flex: ‘I’m getting on, but don’t forget!’"

The actor added, "I’m Camden born and bred, and this character is from Camden which is very much associated with the punk movement, so I think they wanted to lean into what they have for free with me."

"They were like, ‘What do they speak like?’ and I said, ‘Like me!’ I think it gives it that authenticity, like me saying, ‘Man like Pav! [Indian Spider-Man Pavitr Prabhakar] Big steppa!’ I felt really respected."

It is great to hear Kaluuya's excitement about being part of the film and you can tell that he is really happy about the role that was assigned to him since he was looking back at his roots when channeling the character that he voiced.

While we don't know yet how Spider-Punk will play into the story, this could be an indication that he will be a pivotal player in Miles Morales' next multiversal adventure.
