Netflix already confirmed the sixth season of Black Mirror, Variety reports, and according to the source close to the production, latest season is even more cinematic in scope, with each installment being treated as an individual movie.

Charlie Brooker and Annabell Jones, the showrunners of Black Mirror, announced in January 2020 that they were departing the show's production company with Endemol Shine group owning the rights to the show. Since then, Brooker and Jones have formed a new production company called Broke and Bones, which has a deal with Netflix for other projects.

However, because Endemol still holds the rights to Black Mirror, Brooker and Jones can't continue to make more episodes. Brooker also told the Radio Times that he isn't sure if people want to see Black Mirror Season 6 after the COVID-19 pandemic, and that he's more focused on comedic projects.

In the summer of 2019, Banijay Group purchased Endemol. Cathy Payne, head of Banijay's distribution department, told Variety that there's a chance Black Mirror Season 6 could happen in the near future.

Now, evidently, a deal was finally made between Netflix and Banijay Rights— the distribution arm of the company that holds both the format and finished-tape rights to the show — has finally licensed the series to Netflix.

At the time of this article's publication, Netflix hasn't announced an official release date yet, and there are no previews released so far so it's likely that the streaming giant won't release a new season this year.

However, since the COVID-19 pandemic has become less problematic thanks to vaccinations, more and more film and TV projects have continued their production, so if Netflix and Banijay confirm an agreement by next year, it's likely that Black Mirror Season 6 will be released by 2023. However, since there's still no update about the show's revival, it's unlikely that new episodes will be released in 2022.

Netflix's October 2022 schedule for upcoming films and TV shows doesn't include Black Mirror Season 6.
