Why Black Mirror Season 6 Isn't Coming in 2022

Black Mirror fans will have to wait a bit longer before new episodes of the sci-fi dystopian anthology series come out.

It's been two years since Netflix released Series 5 of Black Mirror, and fans are wondering if creator Charlie Brooker is planning to make more episodes of thought-provoking science fiction stories inspired by Rod Serling's iconic multi-genre 1960s anthology TV series The Twilight Zone.

The latest season of Black Mirror was released on Netflix in June 2019, consisted of just three episodes featuring a star-studded cast, including Miley Cyrus, Anthony Mackie, Topher Grace, and Andrew Scott. Brooker initially created the series for Channel 4 before making its way to Netflix for Seasons 3-5, but the streaming giant hasn't announced or confirmed plans for new Black Mirror episodes yet.

Why are new episodes of Black Mirror not releasing anytime soon?

The future of Black Mirror is uncertain, but Netflix already confirmed that a new season is coming. However, it's still unclear when it will be released.

In a May 2020 interview with Radio Times, Brooker admitted that he had put writing new Black Mirror episodes on pause amid the COVID-19 pandemic. According to series creator, the real-life dystopian tone of 2020 — coupled with his dark though not entirely unrealistic stories –might be too much for the general public to "stomach" right now.

"At the moment, I don't know what stomach there would be for stories about societies falling apart, so I'm not working away on one of those," Brooker explained.

However, recent casting updates confirm that Black Mirror Season 6 is currently in the works.

Should we expect new episodes of Black Mirror in 2022?

During an interview with The NewStatesman in 2019, showrunners Brooker and Annabel Jones wouldn't confirm if new episodes had been ordered. However, they did express interest in another season, with Jones telling the outlet that "it would be nice to do more, as there are certainly more ideas."

However, in January 2020, Brooker and Jones announced that they were departing the show's production company, House of Tomorrow, with Endemol Shine holding the rights to the show. Since then, the two have formed a new production company called Broke and Bones, which has a deal with Netflix for other projects.

However, because Endemol still holds the rights to Black Mirror, Brooker and Jones can't continue to make more episodes.

In the summer of 2019, Banijay Group purchased Endemol. Cathy Payne, head of Banijay's distribution department, told Variety that there's a chance Black Mirror Season 6 could happen in the near future. Given the popularity of the show, it's likely that Banijay and Netflix will revive Black Mirror with new episodes.

Netflix already confirmed that Black Mirror Season 6 is coming, Variety first reported, but at the time of this writing, there are no clear signs that it will arrive in 2022. We also double-checked the list of movies and TV shows coming in November 2022, and as expected, Black Mirror Season 6 is not coming to Netflix this month.

Black Mirror Season 6 not releasing 2022 might be a good thing since our current reality feels like a dystopia right now, and we probably don't need more technological horror tales to remind us of our dark fears. However, if you can't wait to find out if or when new episodes are coming, be sure to check out our Black Mirror Season 6 hub for updates and more details.

All five seasons of Black Mirror are still available to watch on Netflix.
