Following the finale’s release, the New York Times shared an interview with the series’ creator. There, Hajime Isayama compared his journey in creating Attack on Titan to what happened with Eren Yeager.

Along with drawing parallels to his and Eren’s journeys, Isayama also mentioned how the series’ ending didn’t change much from the ideas he had when he began the series. This means the story ended on Isayama’s terms.

The Attack on Titan manga ended in 2021, and it proved to be a controversial ending as it divided fans. Now though, the anime has also ended, but its reception is more positive overall.

This can be attributed to some of the changes made to the dialogue, as well as the fact that many of the sequences were extended. For the most part, though, the ending’s events did not change.

Of course, this means that some fans do not like the anime’s ending, whether it’s the plot details or the downer ending credits.

One thing’s for sure though, and that is the fact that the series ended as Isayama envisioned.

In his recent New York Times interview, Isamaya was asked if the series’ ending changed as he continued working on the series.

Isayama revealed that his intention from the beginning was to have a story where the victim becomes the aggressor.

There were certain parts of the story that developed in ways he didn’t expect, but for the most part, the ending didn’t change much from Isayama’s original idea for the finale.

Aside from talking about how the ending was as he envisioned, Isayama did confess that Eren Yeager's journey reflected his creation of the manga.

In the finale, Eren confessed that one of the reasons he led the Rumbling was that he got too much power.

Isayama related to this. He initially thought that Attack on Titan would get canceled, but that was not the case as the series became a global hit. Thus, Isayama got huge power that he wasn’t comfortable with.

Much like how Eren’s power tied him down to continue the Rumbling, Isayama also felt tied down by the power that he had given the series’ success.

This resulted in Isayama feeling tied down to his original vision for the series’ conclusion.

To end the interview, Isayama addressed the grim ending of the series where the cycle of war continued.

He said that while there could’ve been a happier ending, he gave up on this as that can seem hokey and unbelievable, especially considering the state of the world now.
