It has been years since the series’ announcement, and finally, the upcoming Pluto anime got its first preview as well as confirmation of a 2023 Netflix release.

While it was announced way back in 2017, Studio M2 has not given any preview nor many updates about the show’s production.

Finally, fans have their first look at this long-awaited adaptation of Naoki Urasawa’s masterpiece.

Naoki Urasawa is one of the most acclaimed manga artists of all time, and he’s one of the most awarded as well. He has won the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize along with other awards for his various works.

One of his most famous works is Pluto, a manga that was serialized in Big Comic Original from 2003 to 2009.

What made it noteworthy is that it is a reimaging of Astro Boy, the iconic manga series by Osamu Tezuka.

Reworking such a beloved and historic series is one thing, but what made Pluto stand out even more is that instead of focusing on Astro Boy, the series follows Gesicht and is turned into a murder-mystery story.

Despite the baggage that comes with recreating such a classic, Pluto became a hit as it has sold over 8.5 million copies worldwide. It has also been praised by critics and received various awards.

Given the manga’s acclaim, coupled with fans' fond memories of the Monster anime (based on another Urasawa manga), many are excited to see Studio M2’s Pluto anime adaptation.

Studio M2 is significant as it was founded in 2016 by Masao Maruyama, the co-founder of Madhouse and the founder of MAPPA.

He has worked on renowned anime such as Trigun, Paranoia Agent, Hunter x Hunter (2011), and more.

Over the past years, it seems that Maruyama and M2 have been busy with Pluto.

While it took years before we saw an update, it seems worth it now that the new preview is out, which you can watch here:

The 4-minute preview is much meatier than your usual trailer, and it’s a nice taste of what to expect when it comes to the show’s atmosphere and animation.

Pluto’s main voice cast was also revealed along with the trailer, and it features Shinshu Fuji (Risotto in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind), Yoko Hikasa (Emi in The Devil Is a Part-Timer!), and Minori Suzuki (Freyja Wion in Macross Delta).

The Pluto anime series will be released on Netflix sometime in 2023.
