Ant-Man 3: How Captain America Films Affected the Threequel

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania producer Stephen Broussard wants no mistreatment this time on the Ant-Man threequel. Given that the Paul Rudd-led film has always been treated as a “cleansing palette” before the real battle of Avengers films begins, this time, the producer wants to make the threequel BIG. This time, Broussard compares the Ant-Man 3 to Captain America sequel films’ level of impact on the MCU.

Starting off Marvel Phase 5 with Quantumania is already a huge plus as it not only opens the upcoming phase, but also the first Marvel movie of the year. This also makes Scott Lang’s third solo movie where he faces off against a major big bad of the multiverse, the “new” Thanos, Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan Majors). It is also worth taking note that Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania also sets up Kang conquering the multiverse in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty in 2025.

In a recent Ant-Man 3 press release (via The Direct), producer Broussard compares the threequel to prominent Marvel films that exhibit similar themes, both of which happen to be the Captain America sequels. Check out his full statement below:

“We talk about movies like Captain America: Winter Soldier, in which you saw the fall of S.H.I.E.L.D., and it felt like the entirety of the MCU turned on that,” Broussard says, “Captain America: Civil War was another film where you saw heroes divided and in camps and battle lines being drawn — it really felt like the future of the MCU was going to be defined by the action of that film. We really liked the idea of making this Ant-Man film as important and integral to the MCU going forward.”

This isn’t the first time Broussard expressed his strong hold on Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania gaining success on what it stands for: propelling the MCU forward. Given that the Ant-Man films had always been brushed off to be comedic films before the “actual tragic battles” to happen in Avengers films, I’d say their plan so far is unraveling to be exactly what they’re hoping for.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania will hit theaters on February 17, 2023.
