The Second Stage has begun and Alice in Borderland Season 2 is proving that the stakes are much higher as the players participate in the Face Card Games. Interestingly, the series has ensured viewers understand this by planting an unexpected main character in one of the manga's filler story arcs. ALICE IN BORDERLAND SEASON 2 SPOILERS ARE AHEAD, PROCEED WITH CAUTION!

Alice in Borderland Season 2 Changes Up Risky Face Card Game

In Alice in Borderland Season 2 Episode 1, Shuntaro Chishiya gets separated from Kuina Hikari, Ryohei Arisu, and Yuzuha Usagi when the King of Spades attacks the survivors in Shibuya Station. Luckily, it is later confirmed in Episode 3 that he had survived the chaos and decided to join the next Face Card Game which is the Jack of Hearts.

In the manga, the Jack of Hearts game features new minor characters and is considered a filler story arc because none of the main players takes part in the game. Chishiya's participation in the live-action adaptation appears to serve two purposes. It confirms what the character was doing when he was separated from his companions and raises the stakes in the Face Card Game so it doesn't feel like a huge filler at all.

It was interesting to see Chishiya participate in another game after Five of Spades in the first season. However, his appearance in the Jack of Hearts took the spotlight away from Sunato Banda and Oki Yaba, who defeated Enji Matsushita in the Face Card Game. Still, the series needed to cover five chapters in the span of one episode (and a half) in order to get back to the main storyline so it was an understandable sacrifice.

The Jack of Hearts was technically the third Face Card Game featured in Alice in Borderland Season 2. The first one was the King of Spades which was immediately followed by Osmosis, aka the King of Clubs.
