Aladdin 2: Mena Massoud Gives A Hopeful Update About The Sequel

In 2020, it was announced that Aladdin 2 is set to happen and it will be an original story which wouldn't base in the animated sequels of the title with Guy Ritchie returning to the director's chair. However, updates on its production had been slow given that it has been two years since the announcement.

Mena Massoud addresses the matter in an interview with Variety with a hopeful update for all the fans waiting for it, "I don’t know that there is movement. There was a change with the writers, and they are working on a brand new draft. That’s all I know. If Aladdin 2 happens, that’s fantastic. I think it should happen."

Despite being unsure whether major steps in the production had taken place, Massoud reveals that there are two new writers brought in to pen the script and given that a new draft is being made, hopes on seeing Aladdin 2 remains up, meaning it hasn't been canned yet.

Disney has a lot on their plate right now with the live-action remakes of their famous titles including The Little Mermaid, Hercules under the helm of the Russo Brothers, Snow White, and Lilo and Stitch.

That being said, there is still no confirmation yet whether Aladdin 2 has been cancelled, which, the general rule follows that the project is still ongoing, just a little bit delayed. After all, the sequel didn't promise any release date so that could be changed for the better.

These complications could have resulted from the director of Aladdin 2, Guy Ritchie, joining the Russo Brothers in the production of Hercules which is currently in development which could potentially push back the production of Aladdin 2 a little further.

Still, with the writers of Aladdin 2 making a new draft of the original story as promised, doors aren't closed yet for the sequel.

Aladdin 2 is still under pre-production.
