Love it or hate it, the Aladdin remake was a huge success for Disney, and the movie made a lot of bank in the box office. Just in, we have news that a sequel has officially undergoing development.
According to Variety, producers Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich are coming back to make a follow-up to the live-action Aladdin. What's more, the film is aiming for a theatrical release; which is funny, considering that the sequel to the original Aladdin, Return of Jafar, went straight to video. You'd think they would be open to that idea as well, considering that things are way cheaper to release on Disney+.
It's still unknown if Guy Ritchie is going to come back to direct, but the sequel is aiming to bring back Mena Massoud, Naomi Scott, and Will Smith. As of now, offers haven't been given to any of the actors, with the intent to have a script ready first.
We don't know what story the sequel is going for, but hopefully they will just come up with something else rather than remake Return of Jafar. A lot of people actually liked King of Thieves more, which introduced us to Aladdin's father, but maybe it would be best to come up with an original story for the sequel.
Aladdin is a lovable street urchin who meets Princess Jasmine, the beautiful daughter of the sultan of Agrabah. While visiting her exotic palace, Aladdin stumbles upon a magic oil lamp that unleashes a powerful, wisecracking, larger-than-life genie. As Aladdin and the genie start to become friends, they must soon embark on a dangerous mission to stop the evil sorcerer, Jafar, from overthrowing young Jasmine's kingdom.
No release date has been set for the Aladdin sequel, but you can catch the first film now available on home video.
