Adam Warlock Was The Biggest Struggle To Write in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Director Confirms

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James Gunn has kept his end of the bargain in officially introducing Adam Warlock into the MCU.

Portrayed by Narnia and Maze Runner star Will Poulter, Adam Warlock is a product of the threequel’s villain, the High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji).

Warlock is a cosmic entity bearing two aliases: the Master of All Souls and the Avatar of Life, especially since the comics introduced him as the bearer of the Soul Stone.

However, the MCU didn’t go with the storyline. Instead, Adam Warlock, an immortal entity, rebelled against the High Evolutionary, and despite his unstable heroic tendencies, he eventually became a part of the new Guardians of the Galaxy team.

Gunn sheds light as to why he was the biggest struggle to write in the last of the trilogy franchise.

“There’s no doubt it was Adam Warlock,” Gunn said in a recent interview with io9.

The Guardians director added, “It was really difficult. I promised Adam at the end of [Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2]. The High Evolutionary has created Adam’s species, that was the way in.”

“I did feel pressure to put him in… a lot of this stuff was written for Vol. 2, originally, Adam Warlock was in Vol. 2.”

Gunn added that while Warlock was originally going to debut in Vol. 2, Yondu took over the role as the ‘second force’ conflicting the Guardians.

Overall, Gunn stated, “I always had [Adam Warlock] in mind for [Vol. 2], but he seemed to fit better in this movie.”

Gunn’s words ring truer than ever, considering that the MCU is building its hero slate existing within the multiverse. Now, Adam Warlock finally has the chance to get featured in more upcoming films in the franchise, as well.

For now, you can check out Will Poulter’s performance as he makes his MCU debut as Adam Warlock in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, now showing in theaters worldwide.
