Star Trek: Discovery Season 2 BTS Featurette Teases Pike's Major Role

The premiere of Star Trek: Discovery Season 2 is only a few weeks away and CBS All Access wants to give fans a sneak peek into how the new season was filmed. A new featurette offers a behind-the-scenes look at the second season and a teaser on what we could expect from Captain Christopher Pike.

The featurette teases a glimpse at the USS Enterprise. Sonequa Martin-Green confirms that the first thing fans will see in Season 2 is Discovery coming in contact with the famous vessel and its captain. It is immediately made clear that Pike is taking over for Martin-Green's Michael Burnham.

Anson Mount, who plays Pike in the series, immediately confirms that he is a Trekkie who has been interested in the character for a long time.

"Christopher Pike was captain of the Enterprise before [James T.] Kirk. Speaking as a fan, we've always wanted to know more about Pike, it's such a mysterious history," Mount said.

Pike isn't the only original Star Trek character who will be playing a major role in the second season. Star Trek: Discovery is also bringing in Ethan Peck to play a younger version of Spock. Executive producer Olatunde Osunsanmi shares some insight on how the new version of Spock will be somehow different from Leonard Nimoy's iconic performance.

"This iteration of Spock is going through things that we never knew Spock went through," Osunsanmi says. Needless to say, we're looking forward to seeing more of Spock in the series.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 2 will premiere on CBS All Access on January 17, 2019.
