Marvel fans were definitely devastated when Tony Stark had a tragic fate in Avengers: Endgame. Since then, fans have been wondering whether or not he'll return in other projects, especially since they love Robert Downey Jr's portrayal of the character. And while his comments relay a spark of hope, his most recent one seems to suggest that his return as Iron Man has become very very slim.

In a recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the actor was asked if he missed playing the iconic character. "Well when I started, I was in my early 40s, now I'm in my mid-50s," Downey said. "Remember by the time, Superman, the TV show, was over, the guy playing him, you were like, ‘Dude, you are old. The girdle's not working anymore.'" The actor then joked about how he always thinks it's "better to fire yourself before you get fired."

Downey never really gave a direct answer of yes or no in his previous interviews, however, the actor mentioned that if he were to return, there would have to be "a super compelling argument and a series of events" to actually make his return make sense. "But the other thing is, I wanna do other stuff," he added. He also thinks that he already "hung up" his guns so it's "good to let it go."

The actor's return as the beloved superhero is uncertain. Considering what happened to his character in Endgame, fans still hope that Iron Man would be able to live on through other Marvel projects in the future.

Downey's first film post-Endgame is Dolittle which is scheduled for release on January 17.
