Anime has never sounded so good as it does with Those Snow White Notes. The series began with one of the most touching and powerful instrumental scenes of any anime to note as Setsu Sawamura’s grandfather, Matsugoro Sawamura, does a phenomenal rendition of traditional shamisen music in the stillness of a winter’s snow.
So far we have had two episodes released of Those Snow White Notes and it is quickly becoming one of my favorite new anime series of the Spring 2021 season. It’s rare to find a show with some originality, beautiful animation, and touching music in today’s otaku universe.
Those Snow White Notes Episode 3 will release on Saturday, April 17 in the US.
The series will air in Japan at 2:25 AM Japan Standard Time. The series will simulcast on Crunchyroll a few hours later at the following times:
Pacific Time: 11:45 am
Central Time: 1:45 pm
Eastern Time: 2:45 pm
British Time: 7:45 pm
The only place to currently watch the series legally online in English is Crunchyroll. No other sites, such as Funimation, have announced plans to simulcast the series. The series is currently available in sub only. No English Dub has been announced.
Those Snow White Notes is currently not available on Netflix, Hulu, Funimation, or Amazon Prime.
Episode 2 was a beauty to watch. The series diverted from Episode 1, which served more as a prologue, introducing many characters that we don’t get to see in the 2nd episode.
Episode 2 was all about family as we become familiar with Setsu’s eccentric mother. It turns out she is quite a famous singer, actress, and all-around personality. She was even featured in a TV commercial as Setsu had dinner with his father at a diner.
We also learn more about Setsu’s brother, Wakana. He managed to place 3rd in a large Shamisen competition but has plateaued in his abilities, meanwhile Setsu has finally matched him in skill. They reminisce and come together at a local shrine to play a rendition of a song they both created. Their performance highlighted their bond and family traditions while being playful. It marked a turning point and changing of the guard as Setsu has now matched his brother in skill. It’s clear this is the entry point for greatness, as Setsu will go on to discover his own tone and hone his talent.
