The Falcon and the Winter Soldier marks the changing of the guard in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as fans were introduced to Steve Rogers' official successor as Captain America. If you've been following the franchise for quite some time now, you're well aware that Sam Wilson aka the Falcon is poised to take over for Rogers but he had second doubts about accepting the role given to him and chose to relinquish the shield.

This would then lead to the U.S. government appointing the next Captain America in the form of John Walker and although he and Rogers pretty much wear identical gear, it was established from the get-go that the brash and cocky Walker operates differently than his predecessor and even follows his own moral code.

One of the distinct trademarks of Walker's version of the star-spangled man is his use of weapons. Aside from the vibranium shield which can also be used as a weapon, he also carries a gun and we've seen him utilize it in previous episodes. Of course, fans aren't too thrilled with the idea of Cap using a firearm but according to Wyatt Russell, it only makes sense for John to carry a pistol.

In an interview with BBC Radio 1, Russell explains: "Now it's a different day and age where we fight existential wars. This is where this guy came from, we're going to hit them before it happens. Is that the right thing to do? Is that the right way to go about it? It's very difficult, people have different opinions. Lots of people have different opinions about the way it is now and our military is very different than it was. So this guy coming from a modern military background is going to be very different to Steve Rogers of old."

He added: "And so it was almost like 'Well he's got to have a gun. Are you not going to give me a gun? I've worked my entire career with a weapon. You have to give me a weapon.' So I thought they did a pretty good job of writing the line, 'He's not going to use it all the time, but he's got one.'"

Logically speaking, having a pistol gives Walker an advantage because after all, he doesn't have super abilities unlike Rogers but Episode 4 pretty much changed all that after Walker injected himself with the super-soldier serum. With his enhanced abilities, it's safe to assume that he'll finally drop his other weapons but then again, he's a pretty ruthless individual who loves to get the upper hand.
