Zack Snyder Explains Why TV Shows Are Riskier Than Films Today

DC’s Justice League director Zack Snyder opened up on the aspect in which the ‘golden age of television’ has transformed TV shows to be riskier as compared to movies releasing in theaters.

“I think we’re in a real golden age of TV,” Snyder said in his recent appearance on The Russo Brothers’ Pizza Film School podcast.

“In the sense that TV shows are much better at showing you something that you’ve never seen before or catching you off balance or making a turn you didn’t see coming…” Snyder added, “They’re way riskier.”

Euphoria, for instance, I was just watching, the show is just unbelievable. That show shouldn’t exist; it’s so good.”

“And that’s the kind of thing I watch that show and go, ‘This movie would never get made; this movie can’t exist.’”

Snyder continued, “You could imagine Squid Game coming here as a movie would be an arthouse [thing], maybe.”

The Dawn of the Dead director continued to praise the aforementioned shows, “Euphoria and Squid Game take you to places where you have no idea where you are going or what’s happening, and I think that’s what people want.”

Snyder’s words are difficult to ignore, especially since today’s movies are now surrounded by ongoing franchises (John Wick, Indiana Jones, Avatar, MCU, DCU), as well as reboots and remakes.

There’s a reason why TV shows such as HBO’s Euphoria and Netflix’s Squid Game garner more success than most films do in today’s world.

Not only are streaming services an easier open access to all users and subscribers within the pandemic, but series have far more chances in completing a story within their allotted episodes.

To be fair, this does not necessarily negate the idea that cinema is dead now.

However, it cannot be ignored that so far, the success and hype of Euphoria and Squid Game definitely surpass Marvel’s and DC’s latest released films.

Squid Game Season 2 has no confirmed release date yet, but is expected to premiere sometime in 2024. Euphoria Season 3 is expected to begin filming soon.
