Fans of the psychological fantasy anime Wonder Egg Priority might have been a bit disappointed to find out Episode 8 was more recap than new content. But in such an artistic anime, bold enough to tackle the scariest issues a girl might face, even a recap reminds us that this is a rich work with many more secrets to reveal. Here's all you need to know prior to Episode 9 next week.

Wonder Egg Priority Overview and Episode 8 Recap

Wonder Egg Priority is an originalCloverWorks anime written by Shinji Nojima. It follows Ai Ooto, who is devasted following the suicide of her best friend, Koito. In her dream world, she becomes a magical girl saving people who have committed suicide and setting them free. For each person she frees, she comes closer to saving Koito.

Along the way, Ai teams up with other girls in a similar situation. Neiru is a lonely, quiet girl who acts as a CEO of sorts for a big company despite being underage. Her sister committed suicide, but not before stabbing Neiru in the back - at least that's the story Neiru tells her friends, though it's hard to be certain as she's the most cryptic of the group.

Rika is a former child star who struggles with home life. Due to inadequate communication with her single mother, who doesn't know who Rika's father is, Rika has grown up with stereotypical notions about gender, relying on others to pay her expenses. She still cares about her new friends, but while she seems the most carefree of the group, she's more unstable than initially suspected.

Momoe is a queer girl who is often mistaken for a boy due to her physical appearance, causing many fans to speculate she's trans. Momoe seems to be the most stable in the group and the only one with relatively easy home life. She's the niece of Ai's teacher who is currently dating Ai's mother and might have had something to do with Koito's death.

Episode 8, titled "The Happy Friendship Plan" doesn't introduce new plotlines. Rather, it reintroduces us to the main girls through the snarky commentary of Acca and Ura Acca, the mannequin-like entities who provide the girls with wonder eggs. The mysterious entities address the viewer as if they're a prospective buyer of wonder eggs, explaining the mechanics of the dream world the girls enter in their dreams.

We don't get a wealth of new information, but it might be useful to consider what information the recap chose to focus on: the complicated relationship between Ai and her teacher, Mr. Sawaki is dwelt upon, suggesting that he might indeed play a sinister role later on. Neiru's complicated feelings about her sister, Rika's home life, and Momoe's emotional turmoil are also revisited.

Finally, Acca and Ura-Acca promise to reveal more about themselves in Episode 9. The first Seasonof Wonder Egg Priority will only have 12-episodes which seems too little, as the anime obviously has a lot more to unpack. In any case, the next episode can't arrive soon enough!
