This is not the first time the beloved game for 30 years has been translated into the big screen. The first adaptation of Mortal Kombat into film was in 1995 and all that followed it was some sort of movie disaster or a commercial failure, that is, until the reboot of the movie in 2021 when it finally became a successful one.

As for what is next for Mortal Kombat 2021, the cast of the film shared in an exclusive interview with Epicstream that they are looking forward to another movie as they are just getting started. Looking at the story, there is definitely room for more given that a cliffhanger on Johnny Cage was shown. The producer of the film, Todd Garner, had a chat with Collider revealing that a Johnny Cage standalone film is possible.

Just recently, Variety reported that insiders are saying that a sequel to Mortal Kombat is in discussion and that Warner Bros. Pictures are looking to develop more material for the film adaptation of the video-game franchise. This opens the door for another Mortal Kombat movie, and many fans are hoping that there be a tournament happening in the next film should there be one.

Mortal Kombat 2021 follows the story of Cole Young, an orphan who doesn't know about his lineage who becomes an MMA fighter living a quiet life but gets disrupted when Bi-Han/Sub-Zero was sent by Emperor Shang-Tsung to eliminate him as he bears the mark. He met Jax, a Special Forces Major with the same mark as him, and instructed him to find Sonya Blade.

He then finds the sanctuary of Lord Raiden for people with the same mark and there, he trains with Liu Kang, Kung Lao, and Kano, to prepare for the threat posed by the Outworld led by Shang-Tsung. The film was more of an introduction of who the characters are and it would be a fitting setup for the sequel if such would include the tournament. With what is to come next, it will surely be another blockbuster.

Mortal Kombat is available for streaming on HBO Max.
