Who Is Shinsuke Hyoudou in Sengoku Youko?

Shinsuke Hyoudou is a wandering ronin who’s on a warrior’s pilgrimage to become stronger than anyone else.

He often provides comedic relief in the adventure anime series, and his funny but determined personality is a bit similar to Takemichi Hanagaki of Tokyo Revengers.

He has unrealistic fantasies about making his name by hunting brigands before getting hired into the service of some lord.

Also, Shinsuke believes that it is a great plan that lets him both train and get accomplishments to his name.

Shinsuke also claims that he’s insanely good with the sword, and if he felt like it, his helm-splitting strike could take care of brigands and his other opponents.

In reality, however, Shinsuke has poor swordsmanship skills.

He later joins Tama and Jinka in their goal to reform the world. He thinks he can get stronger by joining such strong individuals as Tama and Jinka after witnessing their spirit transformation abilities.

In episode 8, Shinsuke reveals that his real name is Takekichi of Hachikusa Village and that Hyoudou Shinsuke is just an alias.

This means that Shinsuke is not a farmer’s son but a samurai’s son, despite Tama’s initial impression.

Yes, Shinsuke gets stronger in Sengoku Youko. However, he is still significantly weaker than the other characters, especially when compared with Jinka and Shakugan.

Thanks to Zaizou Raidou’s demon sword, Arabuki, Shinsuke can fight on equal terms with some of the characters. His rage, hatred, and desire to be strong, mighty, and important are what fuel him to fight.

Don’t be fooled; Shinsuke doesn’t completely rely on Arabuki’s strength. Arabuki can’t tame him at all, since it's always Shinsuke who forces the former to lend him strength.

With the two of them fighting side by side, they were able to kill Resshin, one of the four beast generals of the Dangaisyuu.

Moreover, Shinsuke doesn’t have a high spirit power, but he can defeat other characters with his muscle power alone.

In fact, Shinsuke successfully defeats Yazen by the end of the series.

Although he isn’t able to kill Yazen, he injures one of his eyes and cuts one of his arms to not allow him to continue experimenting with humans and katawaras.
