Rick and Morty is popularly known for its interdimensional travel with Rick Sanchez dragging his grandson Morty on his adventures. Considering that we've seen different versions of them throughout their six seasons, which Rick and Morty is their original selves?

Are the Main Rick and Morty the Original?

The best episode that fully supports the idea that the Rick and Morty we've been following since the pilot episode has other versions of themselves comes from Rick and Morty Season 1, Episode 6 titled Rick Potion #9.

When the Rick and Morty we've been following in the first season came to a reality where their other versions died, Morty started panicking at the sight of their corpses.

Rick, of course, having done this before, had to snap his grandson out of it.

Rick ultimately convinced Morty that sticking with this version of him is his best chance of surviving, considering they haven't been killed yet.

So, this begs the question, how many times has Rick taken his other self's place in their alternate realities?

In Rick and Morty Season 2, Episode 1 titled A Rickle in Time, the show pretty much explained how the other versions of themselves can cause a time fracture when not properly taken care of.

Basically, the Rick and Morty we've been following from the very beginning have all been a lie, replacements of the 'original' versions of them before the portal gun was even invented. So, how did this happen?

Which Rick and Morty are the Original?

Rick and Morty Season 1, Episode 10 titled Close Rick-Counters of the Rick Kind had Rick Dimension C-137 taken in by the council of Ricks for interrogation.

It was also the first time Morty and the fans of the show found out about the Citadel of Ricks' existence.

While the 'main' Rick did invent the portal gun, he was actually tricked into doing so. It was during the time he lost his wife, Diane, and his daughter, Beth, rendering his grandchildren's existence, Morty and Summer, null and void.

When C-137 Rick and Morty got taken to the Citadel of Ricks for interrogation, the other versions of Ricks were confused as to why Morty declared himself as coming from C-137's reality, too.

It was only because he presumed he was the original Morty paired up with the Rick we've been following (the 'Rickiest' of them all). This confirmed the suspicion that this Morty was not from C-137, as he was never supposed to exist there.

This Morty is actually from the Cronenberged Dimension, aka the Prime Dimension, though what makes it confusing is that it doesn't include a code as C-137's.

As a genius scientist, Rick knew what he had to do, and that was to build the portal gun, so he could go through other dimensions where he could keep himself alive, where his family (his daughter's family) was alive and close to him.

Since Rick and Morty has yet to meet its ending, it is safe to presume that the showrunners, by the end of the upcoming seasons, will unveil where Morty is originally from.
