Rick and Morty: Justin Roiland Axed By Adult Swim Amid Domestic Abuse Charges

Adult Swim has had it with Justin Roiland. The animated TV network has confirmed that they are no longer associated with the Rick and Morty co-creator and that the series will still continue without Roiland after he was charged with felony domestic abuse.

The official Rick and Morty Twitter account shared the news in a short statement.

"Adult Swim has ended its association with Justin Roiland. Rick and Morty will continue. The talented and dedicated crew are hard at work on Season 7," the statement read.

Although Adult Swim has not elaborated on the decision, it was confirmed that Dan Harmon will now serve as the show's sole creator. Moreover, Rick and Morty, who are both voiced by Justin Roiland, will be recast. As of writing, the new voice actors who will play the lead characters have not yet been announced.

But what could this mean about the future beyond Rick and Morty Season 7? The Hollywood Reporter points out that “Adult Swim isn’t even halfway through a massive 70-episode order commissioned by the channel in 2018.” The trade also purports that their sources confirm “Rick and Morty is set to continue, with Roiland’s voice roles to be re-cast. Co-creator Dan Harmon will now be the sole creator. The show is locked in through Season 10.”

Justin Roiland was recently charged with one felony count of domestic battery with corporal injury and one felony count of false imprisonment by menace, violence, fraud and/or deceit by the Orange County District Attorney’s office. According to a May 2020 complaint, The incident against a Jane Doe allegedly occurred in January 2020.

Roiland pleaded not guilty to the charges in October 2020 and the semi-sealed case was kept out of the public until a hearing on January 12, 2023. He is also required to attend a scheduled April 27 hearing.

Rick and Morty Season 7 has not yet been given an official release date.
