After two seasons, many are already looking forward to when The White Lotus will return for a third season. Mike White, the showrunner and director, has created such an exciting show that garnered Emmy and SAG awards. And because of this, HBO has renewed the show for a third season. Here's what we know about The White Lotus Season 3.
Has The White Lotus Been Renewed for a Third Season?
Yes, it's official. HBO has renewed the show for a third season. HBO Programming executive vice president and head of HBO drama series and films, Fracesca Orsi, told Variety:
"Reflecting on The White Lotus humble, run-and-gun origin as a contained pandemic production, it’s impossible not to be awestruck by how Mike orchestrated one of the buzziest and most critically acclaimed shows. And yet, he’s only continued to reach new heights in season 2, which is the ultimate testament to Mike’s raw, unparalleled vision. His courage to explore the uncharted waters of the human psyche, paired with his signature irreverent humor and buoyant directing style, have us all dreaming of more vacation days at the resort we’ve come to adore. We couldn’t be more thrilled to get the chance to collaborate on a third season together."
The show's creator, Mike White, echoed the sentiment and shared:
"I feel so lucky to get this opportunity again and am excited to reunite with my amazingly talented collaborators."
When Will The White Lotus Season 3 Be Released?
Although a third season has been ordered, there's no definite date yet on when the show will be released. The confirmation of The White Lotus Season 3 was announced in November 2022, just after the third episode of The White Lotus Season 2 aired.
In addition to the show's release date, we don't know yet how many episodes there will be. This is because The White Lotus has been inconsistent with the number of episodes included in the show. While the first season only had six episodes, the second season had a total of seven. It's possible that the third season could return with more episodes compared to the earlier seasons.
The cast and crew haven't started filming the scenes for the show yet. But all that is about to change since White has been reportedly scoping out filming locations for its third season.
Where Will The White Lotus Season 3 Take Place?
Speaking of filming locations, an official announcement was made recently that The White Lotus will be filming in Thailand.
The first two seasons of The White Lotus were shot in the beautiful beaches of Hawaii and Italy. And it's only fitting that White decided to bring the set to another continent-- Asia. Back in October 2022, White told Deadline:
"We just turned in our last episode to the network yesterday, so it's hard to think about the next race. But if we did, I think it'd be fun to maybe go to a whole different continent. You know, we did Europe, and maybe Asia, something crazy like that, that would be fun."
Plus, Meghann Fahy's character in the show, Daphne, said in the Season 2 finale: "Next year, the Maldives!" This could be a hint that coincides with White's plan to shoot the third season in Asia.
But as Variety confirms, the third season will be taking place in Thailand. Although the exact location in Thailand hasn't been picked out yet, the publicatio suggests they will be filming in Bangkok, Koh Samui, Chiang Mai, or the Golden Triangle region. This is because these are the locations of the Four Seasons resorts throughout Thailand, which is the same resort franchise where the first two seasons were shot in too.
We'll know for sure once the location has been picked out.
What Will The White Lotus Season 3 Story Be About?
In another Variety interview, the showrunner gave a hint on what The White Lotus Season 3 could be about:
“The first season kind of highlighted money, and then the second season is sex. I think the third season would be maybe a satirical and funny look at death and Eastern religion and spirituality. It feels like it could be a rich tapestry to do another round at White Lotus.”
If this is the premise of the third season, it would definitely be fitting to film it in Thailand.
Who Stars in The White Lotus Season 3?
As of this writing, the cast for The White Lotus Season 3 has not yet been revealed. Since the dark comedy brings about a new set of characters for every season, we can expect to see new ones when the show returns.
HBO executive, Casey Bloys, told Variety that White is "casting people you know."
It's also unfortunate to know that Jennifer Coolidge won't be returning to reprise her role as Tonya McQuoid-Hunt since she died in the finale of the second season. Her husband in the show, Greg Hunt (played by Jon Gries), could make an appearance in the third season.
There are also reports that some characters could be returning in the third season, such as Connie Britton's Nicole and Michael Imperioli's Dominic. Britton told Deadline:
"He wanted me to be in the second season, and there was an idea that I loved for the character. Our intention is to do it in the third season. A piece of casting didn’t work in the second season and we’re hoping to [do] that in the third season. I would love to see a spinoff on every character in that show."
Imperioli also spoke with Esquire magazine about the possibility of his return in The White Lotus:
"Who knows, maybe there’ll be another White Lotus season where Dominic comes with his wife and they patch it all up! I don't want to think about it too much, because the idea of that makes me so happy. I don't want to be disappointed ... I would want nothing more than that. I just loved working with Mike so much."
But nothing official has been revealed.
