Me Before You is a 2016 romantic drama starring Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin. It follows Lou, a young woman who is hired as a carer for Will Traynor, a rich man who is quadriplegic after an accident. The two fall in love, but Lou's bubbly personality doesn't manage to persuade Will to appreciate his life.
The film received mixed reviews, for good reason. Despite the characters' chemistry and some good moments, the portrayal of disability is overtly negative, with a disabled main character believing that he's a burden to his family and carers and that he cannot live a full life due to his disability. This is a very harmful view - all the more so since said main character is portrayed by an able-bodied actor.
Author Jojo Moyes, on whose book the film is based on, stated that Will's attitude is only representative of his character's opinion, hence her choice to have all other characters disagree with Will. The lack of other well-rounded disabled characters doesn't exactly aid that claim, of course. Fans of the book might still enjoy this film, just bear in mind that it is not, and should not be seen as realistic to disabled people's experience.
