Based on Margaret Mitchell's 1936 novel of the same name, Gone With the Wind is a 1939 historical romance, directed by Victor Flemming and starring Vivienne Leigh, Clark Gable, Leslie Howard, and Olivia de Havilland. Like the book, the film is set in the American South during the American Civil War and the Reconstruction Era. It focuses on Scarlett O' Hara, the daughter of a plantation owner, her pursuit of Ashley, who marries her cousin, and her subsequent romance with Rhett Butler.

While the film was extremely successful in the early 20th century, it's important to note its racist portrayal of black people and its romanticization of the plantation era, which make it problematic and controversial today.
