My Happy Marriage: A Japanese Cinderella Love Story
When we think of Cinderella, we are often reminded of the evil stepmother and her daughters, who ruined Cinderella's life.
At the same time, we anticipate the day when Prince Charming finally rescues Cinderella from the grips of her abusers.
My Happy Marriage is similar, except that the female protagonist, Miyo Saimori, is in far worse circumstances than her European counterpart.
Despite being the firstborn in the family, she became a slave to her own family.
Miyo's bad luck began when her mother died and her father remarried. Miyo's stepmother, like Cinderella's, is a harsh woman.
She stole everything Miyo owned, including her mother's prized possessions and, worst of all, her father's adoration.
It didn’t stop there, for Miyo started living a life of servitude after Kaya was born.
Unlike Miyo, Kaya was born with a supernatural gift. This is important in the Saimori household since they are an established family under the Emperor’s wing.
And because Miyo was not able to awaken her gift, her father deemed her a useless Saimori.
When Miyo reached a marriageable age, the head of the family ousted her to marry Kiyoka Kudou, a renowned military man.
There are a lot of rumors regarding Kiyoka, one of which is that he is a very cruel man who made his former fiancées flee in fear of him.
Nonetheless, Miyo had no choice but to follow her father’s orders, so she went to the Kudou household and presented herself. She met Yurie, the housekeeper, who also introduced her to Kiyoka Kudou.
Surprisingly, Kiyoka Kudou is a very beautiful and elegant man, contrary to the rumors about him. His hair is beautiful, and everything about him screams perfection, which is the complete opposite of Miyo.
As the days went by, Miyo and Kiyoka got closer, despite having a rocky start in their relationship. But as Kiyoka found out what Miyo had been through, his empathy for her blossomed into love!

The My Happy Marriage manga and anime are well worth your time. The manga contains beautiful illustrations and character designs, especially for Kiyoka and Miyo.
The same may be said for the anime's stunning backdrops, seamless animation, and design.
The kimonos in My Happy Marriage, in particular, are stunning, and they give the wearer a more vibrant appearance.
In addition, the color palette used in the anime also clearly identifies the characters' societal classes, which is very interesting.
The anime follows the manga closely, although it also includes some anime-original scenes in between, whereas the manga contains more depth owing to narration and character monologues.
Thus, the manga contains more substance than the anime in terms of continuity.
