XO, Kitty is a spinoff series from the hit Netflix film franchise, To All The Boys I Loved Before. Ever since it first came out in 2018, the franchise has launched a total of three movies entitled:

Despite being a spinoff series, you don't need to rewatch the three To All The Boys I Loved Before movies. The co-showrunners of XO, Kitty (Jenny Han and Sascha Rothchild) shared this with Tudum:

"XO, Kitty is definitely its own thing. You could enter into this story just starting with XO, Kitty and be on Kitty’s journey as if you’re meeting her for the first time. She’s the big fish in a small pond, [and] she thinks she knows it all in Portland. Then she has a rude awakening when she’s put in a new place like Seoul. That’s very relatable and universal." - Jenny Han

"I totally agree. XO, Kitty takes place in the same universe as To All the Boys, but it’s very much its own world. So fresh audiences can love it and then go back and watch the movies and read the books if they want." - Sascha Rothchild

The official synopsis of XO, Kitty, according to Netflix, reads:

"Teen matchmaker Kitty Song Covey thinks she knows everything there is to know about love. But when she moves halfway across the world to reunite with her long-distance boyfriend, she’ll soon realize that relationships are a lot more complicated when it’s your own heart on the line."

As a spinoff series, XO, Kitty continues on the events from To All The Boys: Always and Forever, where Kitty meets Dae (played by Choi Min-yeong) while vacationing in South Korea with her family. The two start having a long-distance relationship in the movie.

In XO, Kitty, Kitty manages to convince her parents to let her follow her mom's footsteps and study abroad. Coincidentally, the Korean Independent School of Seoul (KISS) is also where her boyfriend is studying. But after traveling to South Korea, Kitty faces some challenges with her own relationship.

Time for the big question: Will Lara Jean or Peter Kavinsky (played by Noah Centineo) be back in XO, Kitty? Han says:

"We all fell so deeply in love with Lara Jean and her story. So it felt like the greatest gift to give to Kitty was to let her as a character kind of set off on her own two feet and not put her in the shadow of either of her sisters."

This means that we'll see a bunch of new characters in XO, Kitty apart from the ones that will be reprising their roles:

  • Anna Cathcart (as Kitty Song Covey)
  • John Corbett (as Dan Covey)
  • Sarayu Blue (as Trina)
