The Penguin series will be released on Max (formerly HBO Max) in 2024. But those eagerly awaiting its debut might be wanting to know something – exactly when is The Penguin series set?

DC and Warner Bros have reason to keep The Penguin’s story under wraps for as long as possible. So they are not too keen on sharing plot details for now.

But several important members of the production team have already let slip a few key pieces of information that should hint on the TV show’s timeline.

In other words, we should have enough hints to deduce how The Penguin series will fit into the continuity of The Batman franchise. So read on to get the scoop.

Again, no details have been confirmed yet by DC or Warner Bros regarding the first season’s plot. But Colin Farrell, who plays Penguin (aka Oswald Cobblepot), has implied during a 2022 interview that the show’s story will begin immediately after the events of The Batman.

Spoilers ahead!

Some may recall that Matt Reeves’ film ends with the entire Gotham City flooded, no thanks to the Riddler (played by Paul Dano). Plus, the crime boss Carmine Falcone is arrested and killed.

Well, according to Farrell, the first scene of The Penguin series will show him (as the titular character) inside Falcone’s office, which is all flooded. Check out the interview below:

This should give us a clear idea that The Penguin will be set directly after The Batman. We already know that there will be a sequel to the 2022 film.

Titled The Batman - Part II, the highly-anticipated follow-up is scheduled for release in 2025. It is safe to assume that The Penguin’s plot will serve as the connecting story between the first two films of Reeves’ The Batman mythology.

The Penguin show, or at least its first season, will most likely center around Oswald Cobblepot’s rise to power as the new crime kingpin in Gotham, especially after the demise of Carmine Falcone and amid the chaos caused by the city flooding.

The makers of the series have already hinted that they are going to tell Penguin’s story in a gritty way. Months ago, executive producer Dylan Clark had revealed the show will be Gotham’s version of the classic early 1980s gangster film Scarface, starring the legendary Al Pacino.
