The Batman Director Teases Barry Keoghan [SPOILERS] Return in Sequel

We've been waiting a long time for The Batman and the highly anticipated film has finally hit theaters this weekend. This also means that a lot of things have been revealed, including the truth about Barry Keoghan's mysterious role which has been the subject of several theories. But will we get to see more of the character in the future? Director Matt Reeves has addressed the possibility that we'll see more of Keoghan in the sequel! WATCH OUT! THE FOLLOWING CONTAINS SPOILERS FROM THE BATMAN, PROCEED WITH CAUTION!

In The Batman, Barry Keoghan had a brief cameo as an inmate who befriends Edward Nashton aka The Riddler in Arkham Asylum. However, he is more than just a random inmate and might be one that fans will get to see in the future.

Matt Reeves has confirmed with Variety that Barry Keoghan is playing the Joker in The Batman. However, the director was also quick to point out that the cameo isn't a teaser for the sequel.

"It's not an Easter egg scene," Reeves stated. "It's not one of those end-credits Marvel or DC scenes where it's going, like, 'Hey, here's the next movie!' In fact, I have no idea when or if we would return to that character in the movies."

He then added that it was more about opening options for the franchise as a whole. "I thought it'd be really neat if so much of the fabric of Gotham just already existed," Reeves said. "And it was like an old Warner Bros. gangster movie and if you took a certain turn, you might see a character in his origins."

So is the Joker going to be in The Batman 2? "I never was trying to say like, 'Hey, guess what, here's the Joker. Next movie!'" Reeves said. "The idea was more to say, 'Hey, look, if you think that trouble is going to go away in Gotham, you can forget it. It's already here. And it's already delicious.'"

It's disappointing to know that the Batman sequel isn't going to be about the Joker. Nevertheless, we're hoping that we get to see more of the character in the future.

The Batman is now screening in theaters worldwide.
