When Netflix announced that the hit video game/movie franchise, Resident Evil, would be turned into a TV series, its avid fans celebrated the news.

This is because the films made huge changes to its source material so it could focus more on the action scenes compared to what the game truly is, horror. Fans hoped that Netflix would be able to stay true to the game's true nature.

And now that Resident Evil Season 1 has landed on the streaming platform, the next question on peoples minds is: will there be a Resident Evil Season 2?

Resident Evil Season 2: Has It Been Renewed Yet?

Unfortunately, there has not yet been any official announcement from Netflix on whether Resident Evil will be renewed for a second season. But if it were up to showrunner Andrew Dabb, the writing team has planned out a long-term roadmap for the series.

Dabb shared with ComibBook.com: "The games are our backstory. Everything that happened in the games exists in this world. So like, the village is there. We might not get there 'til Season 5, but it is in our world."

If this comment is to be believed, the writers might have a storyline ready for up to Season 5. But at the end of the day, it will depend if the show gets renewed by Netflix or another streaming platform.

In the last week of August 2022, Netflix announced that it won't be renewing Resident Evil for another season. The show has been canceled.

Possible Resident Evil Season 2 Release Date

While we still have to wait for Netflix to greenlight Resident Evil Season 2, we can't help but speculate when the show will get released. If it manages to be renewed, we'd likely see the second season be released sometime in winter 2023 or early 2024. This is a guesstimate ased on the 17 months that it also took Resident Evil Season 1 to be produced. The show started filming in February 2021 and was released in July 2022.

Also, it's worth noting that while Dabb already has an idea on how the show will progress, he still has to write the next season. We don't know yet if this is something he'll do before Netflix decides to renew the show.

If Resident Evil gets renewed, Season 2 will likely to continue where it left off in the finale of the first season. In an interview with Collider, Dabb said "All of them. That's my hope. If the show runs long enough. Look there are... Certainly, by the end of the show, we're kind of teasing characters, including Ada Wong. If we're lucky enough to have a Season 2, I think we can expect multiple characters from the games to appear in ways that are kind of inevitable, and hopefully a little bit surprising."

So this leaves behind a huge question on who will play Ada Wong in Season 2.

If the show returns, we'll likely see the cast return:

  • Ella Balinska (as Jade Wesker)
  • Tamara Smart (as young Jade Wesker)
  • Lance Reddick (as Bert Wesker)
  • Adeline Rudolph (as Billie Wesker)
  • Siena Agudong (as young Billie Wesker)
  • Paola Núñez (as Evelyn Marcus)
  • Ella Zieglmeier (as Bea)
  • Ahad Raza Mir (as Arjun Batra)

In the same interview, Dabb revealed that Billie and Jade Wesker will be tracking down Ada Wong in Japan. It's possible that this is where the setting of the next season will be.

But back in the New Raccoon City, things will be a little more unfortunate with a new Bio Organic Weapon looming. This was seen at the end of the first season finale-- the Tyrant emerging from the destroyed laboratory of Umbrella Corp.

With this threat, it's possible that the residents of the community will experience a new challenge. We could also see a new outbreak of the T-virus, which will put humanity at a near-extinction level in 2036.

There's also some other timelines that can be explored in the upcoming season. For starters, Billie's abduction of Bea is something to look out for. Not to mention, there's the possibility of what's in the young girl's genes that puts her in grave danger.

All these, of course, will be answered once Season 2 gets released. And that is a big if at this point.
