There's both good news and bad news for Locke & Key fans. The good news is that the release date for Locke & Key Season 3 has been announced. Meanwhile, the bad news is that this will be the final season for the Netflix supernatural drama. The third season of the show was actually ordered even before production finished filming Season 2 in late 2020.
When Locke & Key Season 1 premiered on Netflix, the show quickly became a hit among the streaming service's YA clientele. It has certainly come a long way since the comic books (written by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez) were first adapted into a movie. It then went on to become a series that was available on Fox and Hulu prior to its Netflix launch.
Here's everything we know about Locke & Key Season 3 so far:
Locke & Key Season 3 Release Date
While the supernatural drama won't be released in July 2022, you won't have to wait too long for the show to start streaming. Locke & Key Season 3 will be released on August 10, 2022 on Netflix.
The series wrapped up filming Season 3 back in September 2021. Hill took to Twitter to confirm that they already finished filming in response to a fan's question.
The streaming giant released the trailer for the third season, along with a release date. Make sure to make the most out of this series since it'll be the last.
And unlike the previous two seasons that had 10 episodes each, Locke & Key Season 3 will be shorter. Deadline explained that there will only be 8 episodes in Season 3. These episodes, however, appear to be packed in content.
Will There be a Locke & Key Season 4?
Unfortunately, Locke & Key Season 3 will be the final installment of the series. Deadline made this announcement back in April 2022.
This announcement led to some speculation that the show has been canceled. But this isn't necessarily the case. Deadline explained that from the start, Netflix and the series' showrunners, Carlton Cuse and Meredith Averill, only ever planned a three-season arc. The show creators also planned to have only 8 episodes in the final season. The decision was made when Season 1 premiered and became a hit.
"Once we began working on the series, we felt three seasons was the ideal length to bring the story of the Locke family and their Keyhouse adventures to a satisfying conclusion… As storytellers, we are grateful that we had the opportunity to tell our version of Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez's incredible story exactly the way we wanted. We're keeping the magical keys, though, for our own personal use."
With this revelation, we're confident we'll have a clean ending with no loose ends to worry about.
Locke & Key Season 3 Cast: Who's Back in the Show?
Considering that this is the final season, we'll be getting a treat as we'll be seeing the core cast members in Season 3. The show's producers actually started filming Season 3 shortly after Season 2 wrapped up. This means that we can expect a more seamless continuation from the last season.
The cast members that we can expect to see in Locke & Key Season 3 include the following:
- Darby Stanchfield (as Nina Locke)
- Connor Jessup (as Tyler Locke)
- Emilia Jones (as Kinsey Locke)
- Jackson Robert Scott (as Bode Locke)
- Asha Bromfield (as Zadie Wells)
- Sherri Saum (as Ellie Whedon)
- Brendan Hines (as Josh)
- Leishe Meyboom (as Abby)
- Petrice Jones (as Scot)
- Kevin Durand (as Frederick Gideon)
We might also see Hallea Jones return to the series as Eden, despite the events in the finale of Season 2.
At the end of filming, Jeesup shared an emotional goodbye to the show.
Locke & Key Season 3 Plot
One important thing to remember is that the entire show is based on a comic book series. This means that the Locke & Key series on Netflix has been adapted to fit TV viewing. And in the same sense, it can be a bit hard trying to figure out what will take place in the third season. But we can expect it to have more action compared to the previous seasons.
In an interview with Collider, Averill explained that the third season "focuses much more heavily on the family. They're gonna face the greatest threat they've had to face yet. That really bonds them in a way that we've never seen before."
While this statement doesn't really spoil anything, the end of Season 2 gives us a hint that Captain Frederick Gideon will be a bigger villain compared to Dodge, whom they finally defeated.
Another important aspect to Season 3 that we could expect is that there could be some repercussions after Nina got her lost memories back.
It'll also be a challenge for Tyler since he's approaching his 18th birthday. And as explained in the series, one's ability to use magic gets lost upon this age. We might expect Season 3 to be a struggle for Tyler, especially after losing Jackie Veda.
Will There Be a Locke & Key Crossover With The Sandman?
Joe Hill previously revealed that The Sandman will be making its way to Netflix. This announcement led fans to speculate that there’ll be a crossover with Locke & Key at some point.
Unfortunately, this has been debunked by the writer on his Twitter account:
“Nope. Like most Sandman hardcores I’m looking forward to a big, sweeping, faithful adaptation of Neil [Gaiman]’s stories. Can’t wait.”
Where to Watch Locke & Key Season 3 Trailer?
