What You Need To Watch Before Secret Invasion

Up next on the MCU roster is the series, Secret Invasion, soon streaming on Disney Plus! Specifically, on June 21, 2023.

Nick Fury has always worked behind the scenes when it comes to the MCU films and series he makes cameos in, often in post-credit scenes. But now, we get the chance to see him in full action in his own series, with six episodes at that!

As you might be aware, the MCU follows a strict timeline that designs its ever-growing multiverse. So, to fully understand what Secret Invasion has in store for you, here's a list of relevant MCU films and series you need to watch before the Secret Invasion:

Since Secret Invasion is featuring the return of Skrulls, the following MCU films are going to be your best friends in understanding their origins.

Captain Marvel (2019)

The most obvious one would have to be 2019's Captain Marvel, where we first get our introduction about the existence of Skrulls in the MCU.

In the comic books, Skrulls are inherently evil shapeshifters far worse than the Kree Empire, but the Captain Marvel movie showed that there were still some Skrulls who had good hearts and intentions.

In fact, some of them decided to choose helping Carol Danvers and Nick Fury out. This was where it all began — the magic behind Fury's miraculous survival percentage throughout the MCU.

Since Secret Invasion is also relevant to watch before seeing the Captain Marvel sequel, The Marvels, you might want to start off with this film to find out about the Kree Empire, Skrulls, and of course, how it set up The Marvels.

Besides that, the first Captain Marvel was when we first see Fury without his signature eye patch yet. This also sets up his future of becoming the director behind S.H.I.E.L.D.

Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019)

We got to see more of Nick Fury right in Spider-Man: Far From Home as he coordinated with Peter Parker (Tom Holland) to engage in new missions involving Mysterio and protecting the city.

Not to mention, putting 'some sense' into Spider-Man to start off his work and contributions as being a part of the Avengers, too, which put Parker under the care of Fury in the first place.

At the post-credits scene, as Maria Hill and Nick Fury exited the scene, they revealed themselves to be the Skrulls taking the places of the two aforementioned agents, which begs the question, how many times has Fury and his colleagues used the Skrulls to disguise their actual whereabouts?

Now, after finding out about the origins of the Skrulls, here are some of the films that featured significant appearances of Nick Fury.

These are pretty important to watch if you don’t plan on binging all seven seasons of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Iron Man 2 (2010)

Technically, Fury made his first appearance to Tony Stark in the first Iron Man movie, but Iron Man 2 has a more concrete discussion between the two characters.

The first Iron Man movie was simply a cameo appearance from Fury in the beginning of building the Avengers.

It was here when Fury revealed to Tony that his father had been a part of the S.H.I.E.L.D. long before he went to find Tony.

Whether or not you decide to venture first in the Iron Man franchise is up to you, but Iron Man is when the Marvel Cinematic Universe began. Just something to keep in mind.

The Avengers (2012)

The Avengers is when we first see the original team come together thanks to Nick Fury’s program. It depicted Fury’s willingness to keep his secrets from anyone, even from his own company.

The movie also had a broader introduction behind the role of Maria Hill, Fury’s right hand and set to play an even bigger part in Secret Invasion.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)

We almost lost Nick Fury in a car chase that nearly cast him aside in the MCU. Although of course, with Fury being Fury, he had his own backup, fleeing the scene with a scratch.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier proves just how much he has planned when it comes to forming trust with anybody: he never does, which allows him to always be one step ahead of everyone.

It was also in The Winter Soldier when we see Bucky Barnes in action as the enemy going up against Captain America and his team. But his buddy lost his memories, which urged Steve Rogers to find a way to reach his old friend again.

If you can recall, this is exactly when Fury said his iconic line, “But if you want to stay ahead of me, Mr. Secretary, you need to keep both eyes open.”

Though we didn’t get to see Nick Fury here, we do get to know a bit of a backstory behind one of his colleagues, Agent Everest Ross (Martin Freeman), who is bound to have a bigger role in Secret Invasion, as well.

Black Panther tells the story of Wakanda and the people residing over, specifically as we follow T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) who, after the death of his father, the King of Wakanda, returns home to succeed the throne and take his rightful place as king.

However, he must first face a foe that had stayed within the shadows: Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan).

Avengers: Infinity War (2018)

In the post-credit scene of Avengers: Infinity War, we see Maria Hill and Nick Fury experience the aftermath when Thanos snapped his fingers, everyone turning to dust, including these two.

Fury, knowing full well he would likely be one of those that turn into dust during the Blip, managed to send a signal for help to Captain Marvel to help the Avengers.

Avengers: Endgame (2019)

Avengers: Endgame is what happened right before going to Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Though Nick Fury wasn’t seen returning in Endgame, watching this before Far From Home would provide the context behind why he came to search for Peter Parker in the first place.

After losing one of the key superheroes from the Avengers, Far From Home sets a new journey for Spider-Man to practically taking Tony Stark’s place as his somewhat successor.

Not to mention, Stark entrusted his whole database to Peter Parker by giving him his glasses, after all.

Well, if you want to start binge-watching now, you best head on to Disney Plus, where all Marvel movies and series are available to stream.
