What Is Vin Diesel's Role In Avatar 2?

It might be a few months away from release, but Avatar 2: The Way of Water (2022) could end up being the film of the year. After all, it has "blockbuster" written all over it, and it boasts an enormous, star-studded cast, from Zoe Saldana to Sigourney Weaver. But what is Vin Diesel's role in Avatar 2?

As per the official 20th Century Studios description, the synopsis for Avatar: The Way of Water is:

Avatar: The Way of Water boasts a truly enormous cast, whether it's returning cast members or newcomers.

Reprising their roles from Avatar (2009) are Sam Worthington (Jake Sully), Zoe Saldana (Neytiri), CCH Pounder (Mo’at), Giovanni Ribisi (Parker Selfridge), Joel David Moore (Dr. Norm Spellman), Dileep Rao (Dr. Max Patel), and Matt Gerald (Corporal Lyle Wainfleet).

Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang, however, who play Dr. Grace Augustine and Colonel Miles Quaritch in Avatar, will be returning as new characters. Weaver will be playing the adopted Na'vi daughter of Jake and Neytiri, while Lang will be playing a Na'vi version of his character.

Newcomers to the human cast are Jack Champion (Javier “Spider” Socorro), Edie Falco (General Ardmore), Michelle Yeoh (Dr. Karina Mogue), Brendan Cowell (Captain Mick Scoresby), Jemaine Clement (Dr. Ian Garvin), Oona Chaplin (Varang), and CJ Jones and Vin Diesel in undisclosed roles.

But have we learned anything about who - or what - Vin Diesel will be playing in recent weeks? Well, all we've had to go on so far is the epic trailer, and while the footage does appear to show many characters, it's difficult to identify any newcomers to the film series, especially those who are playing Na'vi.

However, as mentioned, Vin Diesel has been confirmed to be playing a human character, so it's fair to say we know something about him. Although he never once appears in the trailer (yes, believe us, we've studied it frame by frame, and the Fast & Furious star's iconic stare is nowhere to be seen).

But perhaps that's where the clue lies - Fast & Furious. It's a franchise that made Vin Diesel a household name, and launched him into infamy as one of Hollywood's tough guy action heroes, alongside the likes of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Jason Statham, Sylvester Stallone, and Arnold Schwarzennegger.

So, the question is, will Vin Diesel be playing a military character of some kind? A second in command to Colonel Miles Quaritch's new Na'vi form, perhaps? It would hardly be a surprise to see Diesel playing such a character, and there will undoubtedly be a lot more military personnel this time around.

Between the trailer and the official synopsis, we know that there will be more trouble for both the Sully family and the world of Pandora, but exactly what that trouble looks like remains to be seen (although it will no doubt revolve around humans trying to exploit the exoplanetary moon all over again).

As such, it would make sense for Vin Diesel to play a tough guy of some kind, whether he ends up being a good guy or a bad guy. With all of that said, we don't even know how big a role he has in the film, as it could be a fleeting cameo designed to set up a more prominent appearance in future movies.

And we know there will be a bunch of sequels - Avatar 3 will release on December 20, 2024. Avatar 4 will follow on December 18, 2026, and Avatar 5 on December 22, 2028, respectively.

However, James Cameron recently hinted that he may not return to direct the last two movies in the series.
