Fruits Basket is a manga by Natsuki Takaya. The series was serialized in Hana to Yumi, a semi-monthly Japanese shojo manga magazine. It follows Tohru Honda, an orphan who was living in a tent by the mountains, who meets Kyo, Yuki, and Shigure Soma who are part of the Soma family.
What Tohru did not expect is that the members of the said family are cursed as they are possessed by the animals of the Chinese zodiac. They turn into their animal forms whenever they are hugged by the opposite gender outside of their family, when they are weak, or when they are stressed. It has been announced that a film, entitled Fruits Basket: Prelude, will be released on February 18, 2022.
What Is Fruits Basket Movie All About?
Fruits Basket was first adapted into an anime in 2001 with 26 episodes. It was rebooted in April 2019 by TMS Entertainment. A second season quickly followed in April 2020 while the final and third season made its premiere in April 2021. With the success of the series, a compilation film, Fruits Basket: Prelude will be released in February 2022.
The prequel will contain scenes from the manga that were not adapted into the anime. Some of the scenes will contain footage from the 2019 reboot series but some parts will be freshly made by Natsuki Takaya.
These new scenes will happen before the main events of the 2019 reboot, primarily focused on Kyoko and Katsuya, who are Tohru’s parents. It has been said that one factor that led to the making of the movie is that fans were anticipating for their story to be adapted.
Manga readers of Fruits Basket already know the backstory of Tohru’s parents but for anime viewers, the story is still left unknown. The anime did not tell much of what happened to Kyoko and Katsuya and the bits and pieces available left fans intrigued.
The Blu-ray copies of the movie will be released on February 2022 as well, which is the same schedule as the movie premiere in theaters. There is still no news when the international release will be so fans will have to anticipate that.
