Stranger Things Season 4 Volume 2 opted to push for a different way of storytelling, like an anthology of four stories intertwined, and in the Russia escape narrative of Hopper, Joyce, Murray, and Enzo, they came across something sinister, the shadows in the soldiers, what is it, anyway?
What Are The Shadows In The Soldiers in Stranger Things Season 4 Volume 2?
In Stranger Things Season 4 Volume 2, Hopper, Joyce, Murray, and Enzo stumbled upon a collection of the creatures of the Upside Down in the same prison that Hopper was in. They instantly knew what the creatures are.
They broke out of the prison only to break in again in hopes of saving the children the trouble and helping them should the Upside Down strike again. However, the prison they got out of is not the same when they broke in again.
It is a mess, to say the least, with prison guards dead and slaughtered. Hopper, Joyce, and Murray came across a dying prison guard with huge claw marks on his face. When they asked what attacked, the prison guard tells them that it is the "shadows."
Hopper, Joyce, and Murray instantaneously knew what the "shadows in the soldiers" meant, the prison guard is pertaining to the Mind Flayer which consumes its victims through the mouth just like in the previous seasons of the show.

The Mind Flayer's origins is also seen in Stranger Things Season 4 Volume 2 when Vecna revealed that he found a creature that can make his plan of being a predator come true. He stumbled upon a cloud in the Upside Down and he improved it by giving it a shape and form, just like that of a spider.
Stranger Things Season 4 Volume 2 made Hopper, Joyce, and Murray revisit the horrors they had been through in the past and they decide to deal with it to the best way that they can.
Hopper even went medieval in fighting a demogorgon with a sword he picked up on the ground and he successfully slain the monster with all his might, tearing the monster's limb first before beheading it, like a champion in a duel.
