Max Mayfield has been a worthy addition to the cast of the series since her arrival in the second run but this time, her arc keeps getting better as she becomes one of the central characters in Stranger Things Season 4 Volume 2. But what does her fate mean, is she dead?
Is Max Dead in Stranger Things Season 4 Volume 2?
Partly yes, partly no -- Max did die in Stranger Things Season 4 Volume 2, for more than a minute, as Lucas indicated. But with Eleven not letting one of her closest friends be a casualty, she did everything she can to bring Max her life back.
Vecna almost got the upper hand but when Eleven heard the voice of Mike, she finally came to her senses, but she were moments too late because Vecna already holds Max in the air. Eleven pushes Vecna away but the damage on Max has already been done. Still, Eleven takes down Vecna who tells her that she is too late.
For a moment, Max was conscious in Lucas' arms but she tells him that she can't see or feel anything. Lucas hurriedly tells Erica to call an ambulance. In the mindscape, Eleven watched in tears how Lucas kept pleading Max to come back to him. Eleven did the unexpected -- bring Max back to life.
It turns out Eleven was successful, however, Max remains in a coma where it is unsure whether she will even wake up. Her limbs are shattered and eyes gouged out, she even has a neck brace. Eleven did perform a miraculous save on Max but she could only do so much.

Will Max Ever Wake Up From Her Coma in Stranger Things Season 4 Volume 2?
To date, no one knows. It's a subject that would surely be dealt with in Stranger Things Season 5, a cliffhanger to keep the fans eager for what comes next to the beloved character.
However, there is a hint on Max's return. While she lays on the hospital bed unconscious, Lucas reads to her "The Talisman" where the main protagonist would have to find the titular artifact to save his mother from terminal cancer.
Just with what "The Talisman" is about, it can be inferred that the Hawkins gang would have to find their own talisman or artifact to bring Max back to life.
